Decoding change: Is the AI revolution a path to unprecedented prosperity, or are we building on a bubble of hype?

The answer to this question might be “yes” to both. One thing is certain: we are standing at the threshold of an AI-driven age. The more deeply we can understand this transition, and the more perspectives we can bring to analyse it, the better prepared we will be.

We are therefore thrilled to introduce a new angle: using the ancient wisdom of the I Ching to facilitate our understanding. Welcome to Decoding Change, a live discussion series designed to explore contemporary questions through timeless frameworks provided by I Ching. In our inaugural session, we turn our focus to AI.

The AI revolution is reshaping our world at a breathtaking pace. From generative models creating novel content to algorithms optimising global industries, the promise of unprecedented prosperity is tantalising. Yet, skeptics rightly point to over-inflated expectations, ethical quandaries, and potential for widespread disruption. Is AI the key that will unlock human potential, or are we collectively chasing a sophisticated mirage?

Therefore, we turn to the I Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes, which offers a practical framework for understanding dynamic forces and their interplay. Yet it doesn't offer simple predictions; it provides a mirror to comprehend the balance of energies in any given situation.

We will introduce the core concepts of the I Ching—such as yin and yang, the hexagrams, and the philosophy of continuous change—and apply them directly to the modern AI landscape. No prior knowledge is required; we will make these concepts both accessible and engaging.

The I Ching contains 64 hexagrams, each representing a unique state of balance or transition. During our session, we will select one of these archetypal situations at random and use it to illuminate the dualities inherent in AI's rise: innovation versus risk, unbounded progress versus necessary caution, and extraordinary opportunity versus profound uncertainty. This “cast” hexagram will serve as our shared lens to explore how these competing energies are shaping AI's trajectory.

Participants will engage in a hands-on, interpretive exercise, dissecting the meaning of our chosen hexagram to spark a nuanced debate about AI’s future. Is the technology sector’s dominant yang energy—bold, expansive, and disruptive—being adequately balanced by yin’s qualities of caution, integration, and reflection?

This session is not about fortune-telling. It is about equipping you with a unique tool to think more critically and creatively about complex, rapid change. Whether you are a technology enthusiast, a cautious skeptic, or simply curious, you will leave with a deeper understanding of the forces at play and a new appreciation for viewing modern dilemmas through a timeless lens.
