Join the discussion: China’s environmental protection measures
Written by April Zhang on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. Posted in Front Page

I remember the days around 2010s when the air was heavily polluted in China. Things have changed greatly in China. A problem that was estimated to last for 50 years no longer commands headlines.
There are several measures implemented to improve China’s environment. If you’re interested, come and join the discussion and practice speaking Mandarin Chinese.
There are sceptics who doubt the validity of climate change and its scientific basis. Therefore, “climate change” is not the centre of this discussion. Instead, let’s talk about China’s environment measures and people’s livelihood. For one, it is just so much nicer to breath clean air everyday.
In my book Mandarin Express Pre-Intermediate Level B, a section is devoted to this problem. China has made this section sort of obsolete, and that is a good thing.
Consider the following measures:
1. The "Great Green Wall," this project began in 1978 and aims to combat desertification by planting trees across northern China.
2. Natural Forest Protection Project: Launched in 1998, this project bans logging in natural forests to preserve biodiversity and protect ecosystems.
3. Grain to Green Program: Started in 2000, this program incentivizes farmers to convert cropland back to forest or grassland, promoting afforestation and reducing soil erosion.
4. Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve: Known as the "water tower" of Asia, this reserve protects the headwaters of the Yellow, Yangtze, and Mekong Rivers.
What do you think?
If you have interesting ideas about these measures or others, and also love a chance to practice speaking about them in Mandarin, this is your chance.

More about this course:
“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.
This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.
It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
