Join the discussion: China’s geopolitical influence and international relations

Not too long ago, western media was full of opinions and stories that were saying China’s influence in the world was waning, as if China was bordering irrelevance. But today, everywhere you look, it is China, China, and China.

Let’s join the club, also take a look at China's geopolitical influence and international relations that have become central topics.

As the world's second-largest economy and a major military power, China's actions and policies significantly impact global dynamics. This discussion will explore China's strategic initiatives, its relationships with other major powers, and its role in shaping the future of international relations.

Points to be considered include the following:

  • Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): What are the main objectives of China's Belt and Road Initiative, and how has it impacted global trade and economic growth? How do participating countries view the economic and political implications of the BRI, and what benefits and challenges have they experienced?
  • South China Sea Disputes: What are the key territorial claims made by China in the South China Sea, and what historical or legal basis do they have? How have neighbouring countries and the international community responded to China's actions in the South China Sea, and what are the potential consequences?
  • China-US Relations: In what ways are China and the United States engaged in strategic competition, particularly in economic, military, and technological domains? What are some areas where China and the United States cooperate, and what are the major points of conflict between the two nations?
  • China's Involvement in Middle East and Europe Conflicts: What role does China play in the Middle East, especially in the context of ongoing conflicts, and how does it balance its relationships with key regional players? How has China positioned itself in the Ukraine conflict, and what are the implications of its neutral stance and its ties with Russia?

What do you think?

If you have interesting ideas about these points or other related issues, and also love a chance to practice speaking about them in Mandarin, this is your chance.

More about this course:

“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.

This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.

It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
