Join the discussion: China’s World Robot Conference

August 8-12, 2025 welcomed 60+ humanoid robots to Beijing for the first World Robot Conference.
Of course, these robots were there for humans to see what robots could achieve. And there were lots of people came! Over 20,000 attendees from 20+ countries came. Besides humanoid robots, there were also smart manufacturing, AI, and etc on display.
I watched this event on TV and thought this would make a great discussion topic.
There are other robotic themed events in other technology powerhouses. For example, Japan’s World Robotics Summit (2025 dates TBA), which will also present a mixture of expos, forums and competitions.
Compared to other events, what differentiates China’s World Robot Conference is that it had a emphasis on humanoid robots, and hosted public events for robot shopping. I have not shopped for a robot before. I guess sooner or later, I will have the opportunity to do so. Indeed, for regular people, perhaps a robot will be like a TV. Everyone will have one.
Our society is being transformed right in front of our eye. There are so many questions that we can ask. For instance:
- Do you want to have a humanoid robot at home to cook for you?
- Do you want an intelligent robot at home, acting as an assistant?
- How many people will embrace robots?
- Who will resent the change?
- Overall, will robots empower society?
- What new challenges will robots bring?
What do you think?
If you have interesting ideas about these questions or others, and also love a chance to practice speaking about them in Mandarin, this is your chance.

More about this course:
“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.
This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.
It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
