The political landscape in the United States is about to change. 

After a historic comeback in the 2024 election, Trump is set to begin his second term as President. This unprecedented return has sparked a myriad of discussions and debates across the entire world.

Let’s also join in and at the same time practice speaking Mandarin Chinese.

Our focus is on his new administration picks. Many are not expected, even to seasoned political figures. 

For instance:

• Matt Gaetz - Attorney General

Gaetz has been under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct. His appointment is seen as highly controversial due to these unresolved legal issues and his reputation as a divisive figure in Congress.

• Pete Hegseth - Secretary of Defense

Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Army veteran, has no prior experience in the Pentagon or government outside of his military service. Additionally, his tattoos that are related to crusaders also raised some eyebrows. 

• Tulsi Gabbard - Director of National Intelligence

Gabbard, a former Democratic Congresswoman, has no background in intelligence. Her views on foreign policy, particularly regarding Russia, have also drawn criticism. People still remember that she was labeled as a “Russian asset”.

• Chris Wright - Secretary of Energy

Wright, an oil industry executive, has denied the climate change. His appointment is controversial due to his ties to the fossil fuel industry and his stance on environmental issues.

“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.

This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.

It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
