The I Ching in your Inbox: Three lessons are ready
Written by April Zhang on Tuesday, 11 November 2025. Posted in Front Page

I always believe that the ultimate goal of learning Chinese is to get access to the treasure of Chinese texts that range back to thousands of years ago. The next best thing is to learn some introductory lessons that teach these texts.
This time, I am happy to announce that a mini-series of I Ching wisdom is just finished.
It includes three lessons. Each one carries a single, usable idea from the Book of Changes—nothing more, nothing less.
Here is what you will receive if you claim your seat:
1. Yin and Yang’s Interaction
A calm way to watch a storm form—inside a market, a meeting, or a marriage—and step aside before it lands.
2. Eight Trigrams as Life Prisms
Eight lenses you can hold up to any problem.
One glance, one decision, one trap avoided.
3. Hexagram 谦 (Modesty)—The Ultimate Resilience Blueprint
Why the lowest place in the room is the one place no flood can reach.

While we wait for the email to arrive, let me honour the final hexagram with more true stories.
This first one is Mamdani winning the election of New York City. He is now under pressure to deliver his campaign promises.
These promises, such as government run grocery stores that offer cheap food and free public buses, are attractive to people who are suffering from years of inflation. However, to deliver these promises, Mamdani has to basically cut through all the existing infrastructure and devastating almost all the entrenched interests.
Can he succeed?
Well, I don’t have a crystal ball. But I am certain he won’t. This judgement is based on this I Ching hexagram 谦.
What Mamdani is about to do is equivalent to marching troops through established realms. To succeed, Mamdani needs support from majority of people and he needs to demonstrate that he is more than an eloquent person. However, he did not have any track record to fall back to, and he has not established himself as a modest yet capable leader of solving problems. In one sentence, according to the hexagram 谦, he lacks what it takes to succeed.
What can Mamdani do?
To begin, he needs to show some modesty, tuning down his winning speech that was very feisty. Being modes will not slow him down. It will keep him upright. By staying low, he can become the ridge that turned the flood.
That is Hexagram 谦 in a reality check.
If you need that kind of steadiness in your own accelerating days, the three lessons are ready.

I Ching is ancient, but the mailbox is new. See you at the other end of send.
