Learning Chinese is more than learning how to bargain in a market or order food in a restaurant. Although it is a lot of fun using Chinese in real life situation, I believe the pinnacle of learning Chinese is to get access to the wealth of thousands years of Chinese texts which contain so much wisdom.
Our world today is in need of Chinese wisdom.
Simply looking around us, we see people glued to their smartphones everywhere. Our world is very much digitally connected and information rich, and yet, paradoxically, leaving us less connected and less happy. That makes the ancient insights of Confucius strikingly relevant. Reading The Analects of Confucius in this digital overload world can be very helpful to reclaim joy in learning, build authentic connections, and navigate differences with grace.
This is the reason that I have written this e-course: The Self: 5 Lessons from Confucius for Cultivating Inner Peace in a Noisy World, for people whose Chinese is not good enough to read the original texts.
The heart of this e-course is: five gentle lessons drawn from The Analects, designed to guide students from personal growth to wiser living in a few evenings.
Each lesson explores one maxim, connecting its timeless essence to modern challenges—like the pull of social media or the pressure of specialisation.
We start with the simple pleasure of learning and true friendship, moving to authenticity amid polished facades, then to cultivating versatility beyond rigid roles. From there, we address the harm of clashing views in a divided world, and finally, embrace the wisdom of knowing your limits in an age of instant answers.
These aren’t abstract lectures; they are reflections that invite students to see themselves anew. And in the final lesson, I drew on contrasts with Western thinkers like Freud and Kant to highlight practical Eastern paths.
After reading through these lessons, students may gain a sense of inner peace and steadiness—perhaps finding delight in a book over endless scrolling, or pausing to listen in a heated conversation. Over time, these shifts can foster resilience, and deeper relationships, turning ancient words into tools for our daily lives.
Whether you're a teacher seeking fresh inspiration, a professional wrestling with burnout, or simply someone craving more meaning, this e-course offers a reflective space to explore at your own pace.
To make it actionable, this e-course ends with some simple steps students can weave into their routines. These steps are just starting points—adapt them to your life, perhaps journaling during a commute or trying one step per week. By the end, you'll have a personal toolkit for turning reflection into habit.
This e-course is available for HKD29.9, making it an easy entry to Confucius’s teachings. If that's a stretch, it is free for those who can’t afford it—simply share a story of using Chinese in your real life, or a small artwork like a photo or illustration. Your contribution keeps the spirit of exchange alive, much like Confucius’s emphasis on mutual learning.
