Join the discussion: Imagining a life where robots are everywhere

AI is here to stay. Robots are here to stay. Did you watch the dancing robots in China’s New Year Gala? That was amazing.

One thing is sure. Our lives will be changed forever. As of all changes, some are good and some are bad; or some people will benefit but some others will get hurt; or some have long term benefits but short term damages and vice versa.

In this discussion, let’s imagine all these different pros and cons in a few areas, such as:

  • Agriculture: Precision Farming on a Massive Scale

Imagine: Vast fields of crops stretch across the countryside, autonomous robots are at work. Drones hover above, scanning the fields for signs of pests, disease, or nutrient deficiencies. Robotic harvesters move methodically through rows of crops, picking fruits and vegetables with precision.

What would be the impact?

  • Factories: Fully Automated Smart Manufacturing

Imagine: Inside sprawling factories, robotic arms assemble electronics, vehicles, and consumer goods with incredible speed and precision. Autonomous vehicles transport materials between stations, while AI systems monitor production lines in real-time, predicting maintenance needs and optimising workflows.

What would be the impact?

  • Elderly Care: Robots Supporting an Aging Population

Imagine: In homes and care facilities, robots assist the elderly with daily tasks. Some help with mobility, guiding individuals with walkers or wheelchairs. Others provide companionship, engaging in conversation, playing games, or even leading light exercises. Robotic caregivers monitor health metrics, reminding residents to take medication and alerting human staff to emergencies.

What would be the impact?

  • Education: Robots as Teachers

Imagine: In schools, robots teachers provide personalised lessons to students, adapting to individual learning styles and paces.

What would be the impact? Does the world still need Chinese teachers such as myself?

  • A utopian vision

Imagine: after hundreds years of living under economists scarcity theory, we finally arrive at a abundant society. While robots handle much of the physical and logistical work, humans have more time for creativity, leisure, and personal growth. Parks are filled with people exercising, painting, or engaging in philosophical discussions.

While this vision sounds terrific, let’s not forget not everyone is interested in discussing philosophy.

What will we do in terms of job displacement, cultural identity or personal fulfilment?

What do you think?

If you have interesting ideas about these points or others, and also love a chance to practice speaking about them in Mandarin, this is your chance.

More about this course:

“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.

This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.

It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
